Ethanol production: When did it all begin? 🏭

If you ride a bike or drive a car in India, you have almost certainly heard people talking about E20 petrol and ethanol blending. Riders across the country call it a “damper mileage aur performance ka deadly combo”—you get high octane fuel for energetic acceleration, while helping the nation save petrol import costs!

But have you ever wondered: Where does all this ethanol come from? When did India first start making it, when did we start mixing it in petrol, and where are all the big ethanol factories located?

1. When Did India Start Producing Ethanol?

Ethanol is not a brand-new invention. In India, ethanol production has a long history that goes back several decades before it ever touched a vehicle engine.

  • Early Days (Before 2000): Traditionally, India produced ethanol mainly as a byproduct of the sugar industry. When sugar mills processed sugarcane, they got molasses (a dark, sticky syrup). This molasses was fermented to make alcohol (ethanol) for medicinal uses, industrial chemicals, and beverages.

  • The Shift to Fuel-Grade Ethanol (Early 2000s): In the early 2000s, the Indian government realized that pure ethanol could also be purified into fuel-grade ethanol (99.5% pure anhydrous alcohol) to run engines.

  • The Modern Grain Revolution (Post-2018): Until 2018, ethanol was made almost exclusively from sugarcane. To produce more, the government allowed distilleries to use maize (corn), broken rice, and damaged food grains. Today, India produces millions of litres of ethanol from both sugarcane and grains!

2. Since When Has India Been Blending Ethanol in Petrol?

The journey of mixing ethanol into petrol happened in three major phases:

Phase 1: The First Pilots (2001 – 2003)

India first started testing ethanol blending on a small trial basis in 2001. Seeing positive results, the Ministry of Petroleum formally launched the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme in January 2003 with a small goal of mixing 5% ethanol (E5) in select states.

Phase 2: Slow Progress (2006 – 2013)

Between 2006 and 2013, blending struggled because supply was inconsistent. Sugar mills did not have enough distilling equipment, and prices were not fixed. By 2013, India was blending less than 1.5% ethanol in petrol nationwide.

Phase 3: The Rocket Expansion (2014 – Present)

From 2014 onward, the government introduced fixed pricing, long-term purchase contracts, and financial loans for distilleries.

  • 10% Blending (E10): India set a target to achieve 10% blending by November 2022, but reached it 5 months ahead of schedule in June 2022!

  • 20% Blending (E20): The original target for nationwide 20% ethanol blending was 2030, but it was fast-tracked to 2025–2026. Today, E20 fuel is available at thousands of petrol pumps across India!

3. Where Are Ethanol Plants Located in India?
